Initially, 1 Billion accounts were estimated to have been affected by a hack on Yahoo in 2013.
Now after almost 4 years, Yahoo has changed its estimation once again. It is believed now that as many as 3 Billion Yahoo accounts were affected as a result of the data hack that happened in 2013. With the new numbers, Yahoo is likely to see an increase in the number of consumer class-action lawsuits in US federal and state courts.
This is the biggest hack ever in the history of the internet. These 3 Billion accounts are more than the number of users on Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook.
The new information about the breach is coming from an investigation after Verizon acquired Yahoo in a $4.48 billion deal. The information leaked as a result of this hack didn’t include paswords in text, credit card or bank information. But since the passwords were encrypted in an old way, the passwords can be extracted out of the encryption.
As a result of this security breach reports, earlier this year, Verizon had cut down the price of acquisition by 350 million dollars but now that it is clear that every account on Yahoo was breached, Verizon might consider cutting the price more down.
Right now, Verizon has not made any comment except than a press release.
