Yahoo is officially shutting down its Messenger. The company announced that Yahoo Messenger will not be supported after 17 July 2018.
Launched in 1998, Yahoo Messenger has been one of the most popular and long-lived services of the Yahoo. The company tells that it gained many loyal users since the start of the service with the evolution of communication landscape, it is time that they focus on new interesting and exciting communication tools that are better able to meet consumer needs.
Currently, there is no replacement service for Yahoo Messenger but it is experimenting with new services and apps, one of the apps is Yahoo Squirrel, which is currently in beta version. Users have six months to download their chats from Yahoo Messenger. After 17 July 2018, users won’t be able to access or sign in to Yahoo Messenger. However, Yahoo ID will continue to work for other services like Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Fantasy.

In 2017, around 3 billion Yahoo accounts were affected as a result of the data hack that happened in 2013. With such a huge number, Yahoo saw an increase in the number of consumer class-action lawsuits in US federal and state courts. This was the biggest hack ever in the history of the internet. Following the data hack, the most senior lawyer at Yahoo resigned following a report which found that the company didn’t look into the case involving hack of Yahoo accounts. The CEO at Yahoo also declined her 2016 bonus and stock awards for that year.
