Xiaomi steals Samsung’s thunder, launches Redmi Note 2 today

A little known Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has upstaged Samsung by launching their Redmi Note 2 today. All of you with the know-how of the on-goings in the tech world will know that Samsung had scheduled its ‘Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2015’ event for today where the new Galaxy Note Smartphone will be announced. The announcement was made via Xiaomi’s official Twitter handle.

While the global launch will take place on 19th August, the phones have been set to launch in China today. It includes the $125 Redmi Note 2 and the $155 Redmi Note 2 Prime. The phones will go on sale on August 16.

The specs are quite impressive. The Redmi Note 2 comes with a 2.0 GHz MediaTek (MTK) Helio X10 processor, 16GB storage and 2GB RAM while the Redmi Note 2 Prime has a 2.2 GHz chip, 32GB storage and 2GB RAM. Both have a 5.5-inch full-HD display, 13MP rear camera and 5MP front camera. They have a 3060mAh removable battery along with a microSD card slot for memory expansion. But it still misses a Stylus which is the trademark for Samsung Galaxy Note series.

These are some of the features which Samsung used to offer as standard on its flagships but strangely removed for its Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge handsets. It appears that Xiaomi is clearly trying to give consumers what Samsung appears to have taken away.

For now, Xiaomi has a huge following in China – something that Apple and Samsung both have had to accept. It was also the third largest smartphone manufacturer last fall. Xiaomi offers beautifully finished smartphones with a small price tag, something that attracts the general public and is a huge threat to the giants in the industry. Right now, Samsung is probably fearing the day when Xiaomi finally comes to the US to steal their huge base.

Xiaomi is not offically available in Pakistan yet. But the speed with which they are expanding, it wouldn’t be surprise if they come here in a few years and try to upstage our local QMobile.
