The world’s third most valuable smartphone maker Xiaomi recently launched its Mi Explorer program in which the Chinese tech giant aims to take its fans to Spain for a global product launch. The sources which are part of this program have revealed to GSMArena that this new product is most likely to be Xiaomi Mi A2 — the successor of Mi A1 — the phone that runs stock Android with nominal hardware specs.
This time, however, the Xiaomi Mi A2 is expected to share its hardware with Xiaomi Mi 6X as it will be powered by Snapdragon 660 chipset along with 4GB or 6GB RAM. The major difference between Mi 6X and Mi A2 would be the stock Android as the upcoming phone will not run Xiaomi’s in-house MIUI 9 skin.
As suggested by a Mi forum post, Xiaomi will officially unveil the Mi A2 at a global launch event in Madrid, Spain on 24th of July. If you are interested to join the event, you can also register for the Mi Explorer program by visiting Xiaomi’s official website. The last date to apply for this program is July 18, but remember you have to afford your travel and accommodation fees yourself.
According to some previous leaks, Mi A2 will arrive with a 5.99-inch full-HD+ display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The device is expected to run stock Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box like its predecessor Mi A1. The phone’s dual rear camera (12MP + 20 MP) arrangement comes with upgraded AI capabilities. While the phone is not running Xiaomi’s custom skin, it will be interesting to see how the company induce over 200 scene recognition modes in pure Android OS.
Considering the Mi A2 a global product, we are hopeful that this device will make its way to emerging markets such as Pakistan. The expected price of the 32GB storage variant is around PKR 36,000, while the 64GB variant will sell for PKR 42,000 or less.
