Meta-owned popular messaging app, WhatsApp is expanding its AI capabilities with the introduction of a new feature that enables users to create personalized AI chatbots directly within the app. This update comes alongside a redesigned Android interface currently in beta testing (version 2.25.1.26), which replaces the Communities tab with a new “AIs” tab on the app’s home screen.
The updated design highlights a suite of AI functionalities, including a selection of “Popular AI characters” and chatbots organized by subject matter. Additionally, the platform now incorporates advanced features like AI-generated images, stickers, and a Meta AI-powered search tool, showcasing WhatsApp’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge artificial intelligence into its ecosystem.
These AI tools and chatbots aren’t new to WhatsApp, though they’re only available in the US and certain other countries, and a limited selection of languages. They’re currently accessed through the app’s primary Chats tab, but this update looks to give them more prominence.
The app is currently experimenting with the expansion of AI bots by introducing the option to create personalized AI characters, as discovered by WABetaInfo in a separate beta update.
While Meta already provides the capability to create custom AI bots through an AI Studio on the Instagram website, integrating this option directly into the app marks a notable simplification of the process.
With features like AI Character and the “AIs” tab, WhatsApp is striving to establish itself as a leader in artificial intelligence-driven communication. Most importantly Meta AI, which is currently present in WhatsApp, the parent company of the talking app Meta has an open-source Large Language Model (LLM) Llama 3 that drives these AI capabilities.
