Video detailing impressive Tesla Model X crash test released

The video shows a slow-motion crash test of the Tesla Model X SUV by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the first time since the vehicle was released. The test earned the SUV 5-star safety ratings in all areas making it the safest SUV on the road at the moment.

Released in 2015, the Tesla Model X SUV was recently tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for safety standards. It was the first independent crash test carried out by the government agency.

The results were nothing but impressive given that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the SUV 5-star ratings in all categories and subcategories. It was good news for Tesla and the company was also quick to acknowledge the praise of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. No other vehicle had received the same ratings from the government agency.

In a blog post, Tesla stated that the high safety standards in the Model X were due to its all-electric design and the drive train that made its architecture different from other SUVs powered by gasoline.

The biggest safety risk in SUVs is rolling over during an accident. Owing to their large size and floor clearance, they tend to easily roll over. However, the Model X uses a battery pack that is fitted to the floor of the car thus lowering the center of gravity. That makes it almost impossible for the car to flip over during an accident. NHTSA thus gave the Model X the higher safety standards.

Tesla used to joke that, during internal safety tests, its scientists had a difficult time flipping the Model X over. NHTSA just confirmed that it was true through its tests. Although yet to be confirmed, Tesla has always stated that one has a 93 percent chance of coming out a car crash safe in the Model X.

The crash test by the NHTSA comes at a great time for Tesla which expected to start deliveries for the Model 3 in a few months.
