Vevo confirms videos breach on its YouTube channel

Yesterday, we reported a breach where a most of the YouTube videos from the channel of Vevo, a popular music video hosting platform, including the YouTube’s most watched video of ”Despacito” song with over 5 billion views was reportedly hacked. Now, Vevo has confirmed the data breach on its YouTube channel and also said that it had been contained.

Just to recall, song video of “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, was briefly removed from YouTube yesterday, along with several other popular YouTube videos, after hackers seemingly defaced the videos. Videos from Adele, Chris Brown, DJ Snake, Drake, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Shakira, and Taylor Swift were reportedly also hacked.

The hackers, appeared with names of Kuroi’sh and Prosox, changed the title of the videos to claim their responsibility for the hack. Along with taking credit for the hacks in the song names, some videos also had the text of “free Palestine” written in the description.

Apparently, firstly it was thought that the hack is associated with YouTube, but when YouTube’s parent company Google was asked for a comment, it referred to Vevo. A Vevo spokesperson said;

“Vevo can confirm that a number of videos in its catalog were subject to a security breach today, which has now been contained. We are working to reinstate all videos affected and our catalog to be restored to full working order. We are continuing to investigate the source of the breach.”

Meanwhile, now it appears that all videos are back to normal as a YouTube’s spokesperson said; “After seeing unusual upload activity on a handful of Vevo channels, we worked quickly with our partner to disable access while they investigate the issue.”
