A USAID funded technology lab at the Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) regional training centre was inaugurated by the US Ambassador in Pakistan, Richard Olson on 9th June, 2015.
The aim of this information technology lab is to impart training to the employees in the current energy sector to help MEPCO improve its overall efficiency and customer services. Thanks to the continuous support of this USAID project, MEPCO has been able to automate all its office functions and start a geography-based information system. This has enabled MEPCO to reduce their power losses, and progressively update their ancient equipment to strengthen their power distribution system.
USAID had also funded MEPCO to install smart meters enabling automation of billing systems which has translated into an increased net income of $45 million. This modernisation drive will help fuel saving in the coming years with the ultimate beneficiaries being MEPCO consumers.
USAID has been involved in various education and now technology projects in Pakistan. Pakistan-U.S. Science and Technology Cooperation Program is one such initiative. The project focuses on enhancing the science & technology sector in Pakistan, fostering innovations and improving the quality & research capabilities in this sector.
