President Trump banned Huawei and ZTE from use in government departments in the US in August this year and his administration is now taking further steps to ensure it gets banned in all allied nations. The US is considering to offer subsidies to countries that will avoid using Huawei’s hardware. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, US officials have met with counterparts in Germany, Japan, and Italy and they are hoping to offer financial benefits in case the countries ban Huawei from being used in their country.
The US fears that the military bases that are elsewhere in the world would be a target of hacks and breaches if Huawei equipment is being used there or in nearby areas. The Chiefs of FBI, CIA, and NSA have all warned against the use of Huawei devices whereas the Chinese company maintains that it operates independently from the government. It also opened centers in UK and Germany to check equipment for security faults and provide additional assurance to the government.
Huawei expressed surprise at the WSJ article and said: “If a government’s behavior extends beyond its jurisdiction, such activity should not be encouraged.” The US government is reportedly concerned about the major use of Huawei equipment especially for the 5G rollout throughout the world that’s why they are taking these steps.
Do you think it is justified for the U.S to take these steps?
