Once again the globally renowned ride-hailing service, Uber is facing a lawsuit by two women, asking the court to force the company to change its driver screening and other practices on behalf of all U.S. riders. The case is completely different from the one we reported a month back where uber faced 5 inquiries regarding Company’s prices and software tools.
The ‘class-action’ lawsuit filed by the women with the condition of anonymity, compiles all those victims who were subject to rape, sexual assault or gender-motivated violence or harassment by Uber drivers in the last four years.
In addition to compensation for the alleged rapes that these women suffered, the women are asking the judge to order a directive against Uber to force the company to implement various policies like more strict background checks on its drivers.
The lawsuit by women alleges that they were assaulted by Uber’s drivers and claims that the ride-hail company has engaged in unlawful and fraudulent conduct that misguided them into believing their drivers would safely transport them. The women further claim the company generally misrepresented the safety of taking an Uber.
According to Recode, the lawsuit argues Uber’s screenings for drivers goes back seven years, mostly because the system Uber uses relies primarily on credit reporting systems. The case also directs Uber to perform six-month criminal checks, bar registered sex offenders and people with rape or assault convictions from driving for the company.
An Uber spokesperson states,
“Uber received this complaint today and we are in the process of reviewing it. These allegations are important to us and we take them very seriously.”
Uber has been sued by everyone, from drivers to passengers to employees to investors, the company seems to be a fatigue for everyone. Our major concern among is that whether $69 billion company be able to get out of this disaster as SoftBank and Dragoneer have already agreed to invest billions in Uber.
