Uber driver murdered in Karachi

After two tragic incidents in twin cities of Pakistan — Islamabad, and Rawalpindi, where drivers of an online ride-sharing service Careem were murdered, another unfortunate incident happened with a driver of Uber in Karachi. An Uber’s driver, named Mirza Shahnawaz Baig, aged 50 years was murdered on Saturday night, near Nagan Chowrangi in Karachi.

The victim was fatally shot in the head by unidentified gunmen while he was driving to Nagan Chowrangi, West-Zone of Karachi. A nine-millimeter (9 mm) pistol was used to kill the driver, according to Dr. Rizwan, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for Central District.

Furthermore, the victim was a former employee of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and was shot three times (twice in the head and once in the chest), as stated by Dr. Rizwan.

Dr. Rizwan said that the police had not found any mobile phone of the victim, which had led them to suspect that the man was gunned down during an incident of robbing.

However, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Amir Farooqi has told Dawn News that this incident could also be intended by the grudge we see these days of conventional taxi and rickshaw drivers against ride-hailing services such as Uber and Careem, who have acquired a fair share in transport business away from the conventional system in the past few years.

Previously, a Careem driver, named Sajawal Ameer who was only 22-year old was murdered n Rawalpindi. This was in series a second tragic incident as another driver of the same ride-hailing company, Careem had shot dead in Islamabad G-13 sector late last month.
