Twitter implements new rules to prevent hate speech and harassment

Twitter has recently announced that it will start enforcing new rules to restrict hateful and abusive content on its platform. The rules that were focused on reducing the amount of abuse, hate speech, violence, and harassment.

One of the most widely used social network and microblogging platform, Twitter has been recently been the part of the discussion as it announced new strict rules regarding content and made changes in its Twitter Support document, last month. The company even removed blue checkmark sign from the verified accounts who were promoting hate speech.

As for now, Twitter has said that it will start the crackdown on accounts who insights violence and physical harm to other users in the app. The affiliated accounts with such groups will also be punished. This means that any group that promotes violence within or out of Twitter’s platform shall be held accountable, with exceptions for military or govt entities.

Twitter explained in a blog post that those accounts disobeying our conduct policies and rules will be treated according to the intensity of misconduct, i.e. the accounts may also be temporarily or permanently blocked. According to the blog post,

“Our hateful conduct policy and rules against abusive behavior prohibit promoting violence against or directly attacking or threatening other people on the basis of their group characteristics, as well as engaging in abusive behavior that harasses, intimidates, or uses fear to silence another person’s voice.”

Furthermore, Twitter has indicated that its new strict policy includes the restriction on any abusive language in the profile information of an account, alongside the abusive language used in tweets. The company has already started enforcement of this policy from today.
