Twitter CEO Backs Widely Criticized Tweet Reading-Rate Limits:A Controversial Move

Elon Musk, Twitter’s owner, announced a temporary move to limit the tweets users can read daily. The move has sparked significant criticism. Since Musk made the announcement, Twitter users posted screenshots presenting they could not see any tweets, even on the pages of corporate advertisers, after hitting the limit.

On Tuesday, Linda Yaccarino tweeted a defense of the temporary move announced by Elon Musk. Twitter addressed the concerns; only a tiny ratio of users will be affected by the limitations. On July 1, Elon Musk restricted the number of tweets users can read daily. The company said advertising has been stable in the days since the step that drew strong criticism from market professionals and users.

In a tweet, Linda Yaccarino tweeted stated,” When you have a mission like Twitter, you need to make big moves to keep strengthening the platform.” It was her first tweet on the announcement by Elon Musk, who said the step was meant to discourage “extreme levels” of data scraping and manipulation.

Earlier, he also expressed his concerns and displeasure with artificial intelligence companies like OpenAI, the owner of chatGPT, for using Twitter’s data to train their bots and large language models (LLM).

Afterward, he raised the limits to 10,000 for verified accounts, 1,000 for unverified, and 500 for new unverified accounts. The step by Twitter took place at a crucial time when competitors were seeking to challenge its dominance.
Soon after Twitter started asking users to sign in to accounts if they wanted to see tweets, the limit went into effect.
Meta-owned platform Facebook said, “It plans to launch a microblogging app called Threads, a rollout that represents a direct challenge to Twitter which has been heavily criticized since Musk bought the company for $44 billion in 2022”.
The social media platforms previously had taken steps to win back advertisers who decided to leave Twitter and to boost subscription revenue by creating verification check marks under Twitter’s Blue Programme Policy.
Though, Elon Musk has not replied to my comment until three days after it was announced. Twitter did not comment but sent an emoji to the news channel, the company’s standard response to media inquiries.
