TikTok removes 30 million videos for violating community standards in Pakistan

TikTok has removed more than 30.7 million videos in the least of the year 2024 in Pakistan mainly to upload more safe and healthy content to the online community.

TikTok shared significant updates about enforcement efforts in the second quarter of the year in a new report. According to the report, 99.5% of flagged videos were deleted before users could report them, and 97% within 24 hours.

The site, which gets more than one billion visits daily, is aimed at improving the machine learning algorithm to effectively tackle toxic posts. TikTok’s moderation efforts escalated in Q2 2024 when the platform removed over 178 million videos from around the world, of which 144 million were done automatically. This shows that the platform’s enhanced detection mechanism can effectively remove the material in real-time.

TikTok is gradually embracing automation to enhance its safety measures for its users across the world. As of now, it takes 98.2% of the dangerous posts, and it proves the effectiveness of the measures taken to moderate the content.

The technological advancements have allowed TikTok to cope with increasing content volumes and prevent the dissemination of damaging content. For instance, TikTok deleted 20 million video clips in Pakistan in the last three months.

According to TikTok’s Community Guidelines Enforcement Report for the first quarter of 2024, the company said that about 93.9% of the videos that violated guidelines were taken down within 24 hours of posting; the proactive removal rate was 99.8% for the world in that first quarter. Preventative actions allowed for the deletion of 166,997,307 videos globally, or approximately 0.9 percent of all videos uploaded to the site.

“A substantial portion of these, 129,335,793 videos, were identified and removed through automated detection technologies, while 6,042,287 videos were reinstated upon further review.”

TikTok also reported the number of comments it has deleted and those that were moderated by its comment safety features for the first time.

“TikTok has removed and filtered 976,479,946 comments using comment safety tools during these three months.”

Recently, TikTok fired hundreds of employees across the world, with about 500 losses in Malaysia due to the implementation of artificial intelligence in content moderation. Human moderators who have poor working conditions, and low wages, are being displaced by AI, which deals with violations such as nudity and violence. But even so, TikTok uses human beings to review content that has been reported for appeals.
