Despite strong competition from other smartphone brands, Apple’s iPhones led global sales in the third quarter of 2024. Driven by high customer demand and innovative pricing strategies, the iPhone 15 has emerged as the world’s top-selling smartphone, according to a recent report.
Counterpoint Research reports that although Apple’s market share has decreased little, the top three smartphones in terms of sales are the iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the iPhone 15 Pro. According to the research, Apple’s Pro models drove higher-value device sales in Q3, making it the first quarter in which they accounted for half of the overall sales of iPhones.
The survey said that ‘the growing consumer preference for high-end smartphones is gradually narrowing the market share gap between the iPhone’s base and Pro variants.’ It also highlighted the impact of attractive financing schemes and trade-in offers on the surge in sales of the iPhone 15.
Remarkably, with five slots, Samsung maintained its position in the global top-10 best-selling smartphone list. Apple came in second with four, while Xiaomi came in third with one. The top 10 smartphones still make up about 19% of the market, even though Samsung’s share has grown.
“Since 2018, no Galaxy S series variation has cracked the top 10 in the third quarter. According to the research, in Q3 of 2024, the top 10 models accounted for 19% of the total sales of smartphones worldwide. The Galaxy S24, manufactured by Samsung, maintained its position in the top ten for the third quarter of 2024.
Marketing efforts for the Samsung Galaxy S24 series have largely focused on the device’s GenAI capabilities, in contrast to the iPhone 15, whose sales have been pushed by financing opportunities. Because of its broader client segments in the entry and mid-price bands and its wider presence across continents, Samsung’s Galaxy A series captured four spots in the top ten.
“With Apple Intelligence and Galaxy AI, Apple and Samsung are further solidifying their position as premium brands. This will help them continue to lead these rankings.” According to the report, both firms are using GenAI to set themselves apart in the premium market.
When it comes to Xiaomi, the Redmi 13C—which replaced the Redmi 12C last year—retained its position in the list for the second quarter in a row because of its price and presence in emerging markets.
