Tech Billionaire Bill Gates gives away $100M for Alzheimer’s research

Bill Gates, the richest man on earth, is popular for his philanthropy and non-profit endeavors to make the world a better place. The latest addition to his efforts is the $100M fund that he has given away for beating Alzheimer disease.

In total, he has given away over $32.91 billion over his lifetime and still remains the richest person on earth. The 100M dollars fund will be given in two chunks to The Dementia Discovery fund. The first tranch will help the organization bring together government and industry on a single platform to work on Dementia.

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a set of diseases which affect a person’s ability to think, it also results in memory loss severe enough to hamper daily activities of a person. Alzheimer is a form of Dementia which affects millions of people on the entire planet.

To put things in perspective about the severity of this disease, Bill Gates said,

“Of all the disorders that plague us late in life, one stands out as a particularly big threat to society: Alzheimer’s disease,” Gates said on his blog. “You have a nearly 50 percent chance of developing the disease if you live into your mid-80s.”

“I hope that in the next 10 years that we have some powerful drugs but it’s possible that won’t be achieved.” Gates told Reuters.

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Bill Gates is the philanthropy king. In past, he has committed huge fundings and grants for different health-related causes throughout the world. His efforts to curb Polio, Malaria, Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS are widely appreciated in the world.
