Student of Virtual University makes it to Google Summer of Code 2016 for the second time

Mr. Tahir Ramzan, a student of Virtual University of Pakistan has been selected for the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2016 for the second time. Mr. Ramzan belongs to Mirpur Campus of Virtual University, and was also selected for last year’s GSoC. Less than 20 Pakistani students have been selected in 12 years of GSoC program and three of them are associated with Virtual University.

The previous year he worked at the project, “Refunds and Partial Payments Extension and API” with CiviCRM as his mentoring organization. This year, he will be developing ModSecurity Connector for Apache. The project is an an open-source, web-based firewall application commonly known as WAF. Supported by web servers such as IIS, Apache and Nginx, the module will be configured and enhanced to protect web applications against cyber attacks.

Each year, GSoC invites students to develop applications for mentoring organizations working with Google. These applications are evaluated by the organizations to see if they can benefit them. The students are given the whole summer to develop, build, and deploy their application. Successful candidates are rewarded with certificates, GSoC merchandise and a hefty stipend.
