Colombo: On December 30, 2024, officials confirmed that a cyberattack compromised the Sri Lanka Police Department’s official social media accounts, including Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and X, as well as the main website of the Government Printer Department.
“Our YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X were hit by cyber-attacks. By now, we have restored all of them other than YouTube,” said Police Spokesman and Superintendent K B Manathunga.
He elaborated by saying that the hackers had been identified and that further investigation was underway.
The official website of the government’s Printer Department was hacked along with the police’s social media accounts. The group responsible for the attack has yet to be discovered, according to the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), a state agency.
The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) reported that there was a breach on the website that publishes all official government publications, including serious announcements.
“We can safely say that the website data had not been compromised, they have only added certain data,” CERT spokesperson Niroshan Ananda told reporters.
