A Pakistani allegedly leaks SnapChat source code on GitHub

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, took action after its source code illegally got leaked online. The alleged Pakistani user uploaded the code on Github. The source code was removed from the platform as a response to a DMCA takedown notice by Snap as reported by Torrent Freak.

Source code is the readable version of any software. Every week, millions of DMCA notices are filed to mitigate the number of infringing content and links available online. While most of the notices are against sharing of movies, songs and video games but once in a blue moon, something unusual also gets added to these notices.

An example of this is the DMCA notice that was recently filed with development platform GitHub by Snap. It was filed against the unauthorized publication as well as distribution of original Snapchat’s source code.

The notice reads,

I am [redacted] at Snap inc., owner of the leaked source code,”

It further states,

“(The Source Code) [I]t was leaked and a user has put it in this Github repo. [T]here is no url to point to [detailing the original content] because Snap Inc. doesn’t publish it publicly.”

As a response, GitHub removed the source code. The site will restore it only if a counterclaim is filed from opposite party.

It remains unknown how GitHub user pulled Snapchat’s source code as well as what aspect of the service does the code relate to.

In his profile, the Github user, i5xx claims to be from a small village in Pakistan. Back in February, Apple also reported to have its source code leaked and filed a takedown notice. The leaked source code was of a core component of iPhone Operating System.
