Smog Eases in Punjab, Government Announces Revised Operational Rules

Lahore: The Punjab Environmental Department(EPA)  has issued new operational guidelines as smog intensity decreases across the region. Under the updated measures, restaurants and hotels can now offer dine-in and outdoor services until 10 p.m., an extension from the previous 4 p.m. closure imposed during severe smog conditions. The department also clarified that home delivery services remain unaffected by any restrictions.

The improved air quality has been attributed to the recent rainfall and fluctuating wind velocities, which compelled authorities to modify the draconian measures that had been in place since November 15. In this regard, the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Divisional Commissioners have been directed to implement the new measures.

In a related development, the Punjab government announced the reopening of schools in some areas after assessing the reduced levels of smog. Schools in Rawalpindi Division, which includes Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Attock, and Chakwal, will resume classes following a temporary closure that started on November 17 and was initially set to last until November 25. This decision follows a notification stating that air pollution levels have subsided in these districts.

Despite improvements, toxic smog levels in Lahore and other cities of Punjab remain concerning.  The level of pollution in Lahore, which was recently ranked second on the list of the most polluted cities in the world with an AQI of 497, has experienced a slight decrease.

Previously, to curb the effects of smog, the Lahore district administration had suspended all outdoor activities, including sports and events, while exempting religious gatherings. However, religious parties have been granted an exemption. The restrictions also include a provision that prohibits the operation of shops, markets, and centers after 8 p.m. Medical stores, laboratories, petrol stations, and grocery shops are permitted to continue operating after this time.

The most recent measures are intended to resolve the general public health concerns associated with the resumption of economic and educational activities in the province.
