Sindh universities are being labeled as a hub of corruption

Pakistan has always been engulfed by allegations of corruption and it appears now that universities are no different. Government-run universities in Sindh have come under fire due to corruption and mismanagement allegations.

In recent rankings released by the HEC, government universities of Sindh have not faired well – failing to grab any good spots on the list. Karachi University, quite a renowned institution, is currently under fire for corruption allegations. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has taken the university’s Vice Chancellor Dr. M. Qaiser under questioning regarding the allegations of corruption and embezzlement of university funds. According to allegations, these acts of corruption at KU have cost the national exchequer Rs. 566 million. KU has also been experiencing a financial crisis which could be due to these serious acts of corruption being silently carried out.

However, Karachi University is not the only Sindh university under the radar. Strict action is being taken against violators and corrupt heads of these institutions. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Sindh Assembly has already asked the Sindh Chief Minister to sack Prof. Dr. Parveen Shah, Vice Chancellor of Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) Khairpur and Prof. Dr. Abdul Karim Baloch, the Vice Chancellor of Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology (QUEST) Nawabshah for not attending the PAC meeting.

Acts of corruption are widely carried out in all Pakistani institutions. Sindh is not an exception. Government institutions in particular. A few years ago, the case of ghost schools sprouted up who were using government money to run schools that hadn’t even been built. It is good to see officials taking action against individuals who are putting the future of our young generation at stake. Such actions need to be taken in other provinces as well.
