Shireen Mazari, Federal Minister for Human Rights, met with a delegation from Facebook, including the Vice President of Asian Pacific Public Policy for Facebook Simon Milner, Head of Public Policy for Facebook Pakistan Sarim Aziz, and Public Policy Manager for Facebook Pakistan Sehar Tariq and Digital Media specialist Imran Ghazali.
The minister raised fake news issue with the delegation, and the Facebook team informed her about the steps being taken by Facebook to curb fake news through a combination of latest technology, introducing fact checkers and promoting news literacy in Pakistan. Fake news has recently become a huge issue in Pakistan too and there is a serious need for all concerned authorities to take steps to reduce its impact.
Shireen Mazari told Facebook about different initiatives being taken by the Government of Pakistan to address various human rights issues. VP for APAC Public Policy, Simon Milner, assured the Minister of Facebook’s full support towards steps taken to promote human rights awareness in Pakistan and initiatives like Zainab Alert Act, Women Inheritance Law, and Transgender Rights Law.
Minister for Human Rights also said that the government was taking steps to create modern technology teams with the aim of using online tools to quickly resolve citizen issues.
