Several Huawei employees have worked with Chinese military on AI and communications projects: Bloomberg

One of the world’s most resourceful business media companies, Bloomberg has reported that Huawei employees were part of several research projects with China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

As the US ambitions to end ties with Chinese telecom giant Huawei are becoming darker every day, more insights regarding Huawei’s wrongdoings are coming to light. According to a new report by Bloomberg, Huawei employees worked on at least 10 research projects “spanning artificial intelligence to radio communications” with Chinese armed forces personnel since 2009. Whereas, the Chinese company’s spokesman claims that it was not aware of the employees’ working “in their individual capacity”.

Bloomberg picked research papers from various publicly disclosed sources that indicate how employees of China’s largest technology company collaborated with the PLA on research into an “array of potential military and security applications”.

It remains to be seen whether Bloomberg’s finding of the old online database that is also used by university students in research work, encompassed every instance of Huawei-employee collaboration with the PLA. However, it is likely that many sensitive tech projects of Military and Huawei are classified and were never posted online. Bloomberg reports that it discovered thousands of sensitive projects in the database but only 10 of them had signs of a collaborative effort of the Chinese military and Huawei.

On the other hand, Huawei’s spokesman Joe Kelly has said that;

“Huawei is not aware of its employees publishing research papers in their individual capacity. Huawei only develops and produces communications products that conform to civil standards worldwide, and does not customize R&D products for the military.”

Notably, it is well-known and understood that technology companies and military agencies have been collaborating around the world for decades in order to provide technologies that underpin the modern internet. It’s mysterious that Huawei is denying such reports.
