The government of Punjab has announced a change in school timings across Punjab including Lahore due to improved air quality conditions.
From December 4th, 2024, both private and public educational institutions will be permitted to initiate classes at 8:15 AM, which is a half-hour earlier than the previous schedule.
The announcement, made by Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh, Director General of the Environment Department, indicates a favorable development in the region’s efforts to combat pollution, as evidenced by a notable enhancement in the Air Quality Index (AQI).
This alteration follows a difficult period during which elevated levels of hazardous pollution necessitated the closure of educational institutions. Educational institutions in Lahore and Multan resumed operations on November 20th, 2024, but under strict regulations aimed at protecting students and staff:
- Classes were delayed until 8:45 am.
- Masks were mandatory for all.
- Outdoor sports and activities were banned entirely.
The new schedule demonstrates the government’s assurance in enhancing air quality, while underscoring the ongoing necessity for vigilance.
