Samsung to manufacture 160 million OLED screens for Apple’s iPhone

Samsung Display has reportedly signed a $4.3 billion (5 trillion won) deal with Apple to manufacture 60 million units of OLED screens for iPhone 8.

This has been reported by Korean Herald, The Investor. Samsung Display is a subsidiary of Korean smartphone manufacturing company, Samsung. Last year, the display maker agreed to manufacture 100 million units of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels for Apple’s next iPhone and now with the additional 60 million, the total number becomes 160 million.

There have been many rumors about the new iPhone as it is going to be a special one in the commemoration of Apple’s 10th anniversary, and is expected to cost over a thousand US dollars (PKR 104,785). It is rumored to be launched in September this year. The phone is expected to have 5.2 to 5.8 inches OLED bezel-less display with a fingerprint sensor, facial/gesture recognition and wireless charging capabilities.

Samsung Display is world’s leader in OLED manufacturing, dominating almost 95 percent of the market. Samsung uses OLED for about 70 percent of its smartphones, including the flagship S series, while iPhone uses LCDs. Samsung S8 will also have AMOLED display with minimized bezel.

Apple reported highest ever iPhone sales last quarter. The teaming up of the two biggest rivals can give some serious competition to other smartphone manufacturers.

Neither Apple nor Samsung have confirmed the deal yet. We will update you when there is a further development in the story.
