Samsung might also unveil its AI chips along with Galaxy S9/S9+ at MWC

Samsung’s upcoming flagships Galaxy S9 and S9+ are all set to launch at MWC next month. Although the anticipation of these beasts is already on the rise, yet a new report affirms that Samsung is also expediting the launch of its AI chips at MWC. A South Korean news outlet reveals that Samsung is quite close to finalizing the development of Neural Processing Units (NPU). This means that Samsung has reached the same level for its chips that its close rivals Apple and Huawei already have.

Apple’s A11 Bionic and Huawei’s Kirin 970 are the companies latest SoCs that have already been featured in most of the flagships smartphones of both smartphones giant. Apple’s flagships including iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus all work on NPUs. Similarly, Huawei’s Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro and Honor V10 also feature AI-powered chips. The Neural Processing Units allows a smartphone to analyze, process and store data without using the cloud. The sources have revealed to Korea Herald that Samsung’s upcoming AI chips will be available for mass production in the second half of this year. It is likely that Samsung will unveil it’s new NPU capabilities at the time of the unveiling of Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9+ on February 25th, a day before MWC.

According to the info revealed by sources of Korea Herald,

“Although the company has been somewhat late in the AI field, it was quite fast in catching up with competitors. Still, it is too early to compare the performances of AI chips by Samsung, Apple and Huawei, because the market has just been formed. Apple claims that its NPU has reached 600 in giga operations per second, while Huawei says 4 in tera operations per second. Samsung’s is estimated to be similar or slightly higher at the moment.”

As the sources reveal that Samsung has almost completed the development of AI chips for servers as well as mobile devices, it looks like the tech giant will soon be able to give tough time to its rivals in this domain too.
