Samsung is working on under-display camera technology

The recent catastrophic introduction of Galaxy Fold was a PR nightmare for Samsung’s brand image. However, this isn’t stopping Samsung from experimenting with new ways to incorporate camera and sensors in smartphone displays. According to Samsung’s vice president of Research and Development division, Yang Byung-Duk Samsung is close to creating a full-screen panel (without a hole-punch).

Yang Byung-Duk stated that the camera and sensors will be incorporated under the screen without hindering the display. If everything goes as planned, then consumers will be able to use both the front camera and a full bezel-less, notch-less and punch-hole-less display, a concept design the tech-enthusiasts have been dreaming for some time now. However, it will take at least one to two years.

Though it wouldn’t be possible to make (a full-screen smartphone) in the next 1-2 years, the technology can move forward to the point where the camera hole will be invisible, while not affecting the camera’s function in any way — Yang Byung-Duk, vice president of Samsung’s Mobile Communication R&D Group Display

This new technology (if implemented) will finally enable Samsung to achieve that full-screen display that the South Korean Giant has been designed for such a long time now. Up till now the only way to achieve a 100% bezel-less screen has been by using a motorized mechanism which has a lot of shortcomings, such as dust particles being stuck in the motor parts which may render the entire mechanism useless.

Furthermore, the South-Korean giant has also filed a patent with USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office). The patent is about a ‘wrap-around’ display which seemingly extends around the edges and continues on the back of the phone. While this patent doesn’t relate to the under-display technology, it, however, indicates that Samsung may also be working on a wearable smartphone. As absurd as that sounds it might be true since smartphone watches are becoming quite functional in recent times. Let’s see what Samsung has in store for us.
