Samsung is working on Face ID like 3D facial scanning

As the Android pie update for Galaxy S9 AND Galaxy Note 9 begins to rollout (in Europe mainly), the software update hints at 3D scanning for upcoming phones.

Ever since Apple introduced the facial recognition technology with their iPhone X, it has become a fleeting trend in the smartphone industry. In consequence to which, Sammobile suggests that Samsung is also looking to bounce on the 3D facial scanning wagon.

On analysis of the Android Pie 9.0 update being released to Samsung devices, XDA Developers found that the code for biometric security in Samsung’s system application indicates that Samsung will soon be coming up with something many refer to as a Time of Flight (ToF) sensor.

The Time of Flight (ToF) sensor works by measuring the time it takes a pulse of emitted light to be reflected back to the sensor, then a 3D map for an object (face) is created at that point through the data gathered.

However, it is not certain that ToF will be introduced by Samsung on the Galaxy S10. But if Samsung is to debut the 3D scanner on the Galaxy S10, it might have to deal with the absence of a notch on its Infinity-O display design, as ToF sensor might require more area to properly work. According to earlier reports, Samsung was looking to incorporate additional sensors in the front facing camera, so we might get a ToF built right into the cutout for the front camera.
