It’s that time of the year again! The hype is big, the rumor mills are going wild and the leaks are everywhere. We are now just two days away from Samsung’s second-most important event of the year, the flagship S6 launch being the most important. The invites have already been sent and Samsung has suggested we save the date “8/13/2015”.
Samsung is in a pretty dire situation right now. Phones sales have fallen down, its stocks are trading at a year-low and it’s hard to see Samsung making a comeback to claim the lost crown of King of smartphones. Most of the South Korean company’s hopes still rest on Friday’s event. So let’s take a look at what to expect from the Galaxy Unpacked 2015 event.
This is pretty obvious really. The Galaxy Note lineup has been perhaps Samsung’s most popular series apart from its Galaxy S Flagships and as the Note 4 came out last year in September, it is pretty clear that we are due for a successor. Apart from that, we are also pretty sure that the Note 5 will be borrowing a lot of things from the Galaxy S6, especially in terms of the design. Samsung has been criticized for ages about its plastic-y phone design, but it received a whole lot of praise for embracing a premium look and feel for the S6. Meaning? Expect the Note 5 to have aluminium edges and a glass back design too.
Sources indicate that Samsung will opt to keep the same display as the Note 4, a 5.7-inches, Super AMOLED screen with Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440) resolution. While for the other specs, the phablet will be using an Exynos octa-core processor coupled with 3GB of RAM and the cameras should be 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel shooters. Another area in which the phone giant will be looking to improving the Note is by S Pen (stylus) to make it a lot more easy to pull out of the phone with an auto-eject feature.
Note 5 may not be the only new phone appearing in the Unpacked event, as there are rumors flying around indicating the launch of a second phone called “Galaxy S6 Edge Plus”. As shown above, Samsung’s own cover image of the Unpacked event is really a kind of a confirmation of a new curved screen device to be launched.
The original S6 edge was launched alongside S6 and served as a slightly more expensive curved-screen variant of the flagship. Samsung will probably pursue that same strategy and position the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus as a curved-screen variant of the Note 5. Also, recent reports indicate that the Malaysian certification body “SIRM” has given the go ahead to Samsung Galaxy S6 edge Plus so the edge plus is almost certainly coming.
Although there is very little evidence to suggest Samsung’s launch of a new tablet, we might be in for a surprise. Apple has clearly dominated the tablet market with the iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Tabs haven’t been much of a success. Samsung’s Philippines website did upload a teaser image which clearly shows the silhouettes of three devices, so if we count the first two as the Note 5 and the S6 Edge Plus, then the third device does look like an 8-inch Tablet.
All of these are just guesswork and based on rumors and leaks rather than facts, so we won’t know for sure until Samsung finally unveils the curtains on its next range of devices two days from now.
The event is scheduled for the 13th of August, 11 am EDT and you can follow it live on Samsung’s channel on YouTube or through Samsung Tomorrow website. We at TechJuice will also be covering the event live, so stay tuned for more updates.
