Samsung finally reveals the causes behind Note 7 incidents

Samsung has finally announced the cause of Note 7 incidents as well as measures to prevent a recurrence during a press conference held in Seoul, Korea.

Samsung Note7, which was released in September 2016, was first replaced and then ultimately recalled due to multiple incidents of device exploding due to unknown reasons. The device is banned for use on nearly all major airlines, including PIA.

To find the root cause of the Galaxy Note7 incidents, Samsung carefully inspected every aspect of the Galaxy Note7, including hardware, software and related processes over the past several months. The investigations concluded that the batteries were the cause of the Galaxy Note7 incidents.

DJ Koh, President of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics, shared detailed results of the investigation and apologized to Galaxy Note7 customers, mobile operators, retail and distribution partners and business partners for their patience and continued support. He said,

“For the last several months, together with independent industry expert organizations, we conducted thorough investigation to find cause to the Galaxy Note7 incidents. Today, more than ever, we are committed to earning the trust of our customers through innovation that redefines what is possible in safety, and as a gateway to unlimited possibilities and incredible new experiences.”

Causes

The Lithium-ion battery has a separator to isolate positive and negative terminals of the battery. A short circuit occurs if the separator damages.

Two sets of batteries were inspected. In Battery A, the negative electrode was deflected on upper right corner.

In the second set, Battery B, High welding burrs on positive electrode resulted in the insulation failure.

What’s next?

Samsung has implemented a broad range of internal quality and safety processes to further enhance product safety including additional protocols such as the multi-layer safety measures and 8-Point Battery Safety Check. Samsung has also formed a Battery Advisory Group of external advisers, academic and research experts to ensure it maintains a clear and objective perspective on battery safety and innovation.
