Samsung to develop a new magnesium alloy for its upcoming top Galaxy phones

The South Korean giant, Samsung is ready to use the magnesium alloy for the upcoming next-generation flagship smartphones.

This magnesium alloy is called “Metal 12”. Apparently, this is a new light-weight, durable, and a substantial material developed by Samsung. This alloy body is made up of magnesium and aluminum. Samsung had already used this material on its recent Notebook 9 (2018) series.

Samsung cares for their users as the company is more concerned towards customers’ priorities. Samsung is already planning to file the trademark of this special material “Metal 12” in European Union Intellectual Property Office. The trademark application suggests that this magnesium aluminum alloy will be allowed to be used in the future smartphones, other tech accessories and even in home appliances. Later on, it will also be used in various other products of the company.

There are rumors that Samsung is using the magnesium aluminum material in their upcoming flagship smartphones i.e Galaxy S9/S9+. This will possibly reduce the weight of the smartphones without affecting their durability and make them long-lasting. Previously, Samsung had tested a prototype, making link Galaxy S7 from a magnesium alloy but the final product but that device didn’t feature this metal.

By the use of this special material in the body, the “Metal 12” alloy could make the product more durable and reduce its weight. Moreover, this material was used in Notebook 9 laptops. Now, the 13.3-inch Notebook 9 variant weights only 995g while the 15.6inch variant is just 300 g heavier. Thus, Samsung boosted the portability of these laptops by making them lightweight.

The flagships, Galaxy S9 and S9+ by the South Korean company are expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Conference (MWC) 2018 in late February.
