Samsung announces world’s biggest SSD with 30TB capacity

Looks like Samsung is fond of doing bigger things; like its bigger Galaxy Note 8, launched last year and massive 512GB storage chip launched recently. And now, the South Korean giant has done it again, as it has announced the ongoing production of a massive 30+ terabyte (TB) solid state drive (SSD) called the PM1643.

Samsung’s new SSD is dubbed to be the world’s largest SSD with a capacity of 30.72TB in a standard 2.5-inch drive. Samsung is making big things but that doesn’t mean that all big things are dumb. The drive is as fast as you can imagine, as it has nine flash controllers driving 32 1TB packages of NAND flash, with each package containing 16 layers of 512Gb 3-bit-per-cell V-NAND. This proves that the device delivers twice the capacity and performance of its previous record-setting SSD, the 15.36TB version, which was introduced back in 2016.

Furthermore, there is also another 40GB of DDR4 RAM. The RAM is also exceptional, as the 8Gb chips induced in the RAM are built using Through Silicon Vias (TSVs), enabling them to be stacked vertically. They are assembled into 10 packages each of 4GB.

According to a Samsung’s official statement,

“With our launch of the 30.72TB SSD, we are once again shattering the enterprise storage capacity barrier, and in the process, opening up new horizons for ultra-high capacity storage systems worldwide. Samsung will continue to move aggressively in meeting the shifting demand toward SSDs over 10TB and at the same time, accelerating adoption of our trail-blazing storage solutions in a new age of enterprise systems.”

In addition, the PM1643 can store up to 5,700 full HD videos, with an average size of 5GB per video. The company claims it can reach 400,000 reads and 50,000 write random IOPS, with sequential read and write speeds of 2,100MB/s and 1,700MB/s, respectively.

The company gave no clue on their price and availability in the market, and we are also not expecting these big guns to be on our laptops and desktops anytime soon. However, this affirms that other versions of Samsung’s SSD like 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB, and 800GB are certainly going to get a price cut.
