Samsung announces mass production of industry-leading SSDs; aiming to power the AI Era

Samsung Electronics, a global leader in memory technology, has announced the release of its most recent and fastest Solid State Drive SSD for PCs.

The South Korean IT giant has begun preparing for the PCIe 5.0-based product, model name PM9E1, which has industry-leading performance and capability. It is the quickest and most capacious solid-state drive to date, thanks to Samsung’s in-house 5-nanometer controller and eighth-generation V-NAND technology.

The new SSD has significantly improved in power efficiency, performance, and security, making it compatible with the quickly growing on-device AI industry.

“The PM9E1, integrated with our 5nm controller, sets a new benchmark for power efficiency and performance,” said YongCheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics. “In the rapidly evolving on-device AI era, this SSD will provide a strong foundation for our global customers as they expand their AI portfolios.”

The PM9E1 features an eight-channel PCIe 5.0 interface and sequential read and write speeds of up to 14.5GB/s and 13GB/s, respectively. This is more than a double improvement over the preceding type, making it ideal for high-speed artificial intelligence applications. For example, an SSD can read a 14GB large language model (LLM) from storage to DRAM in less than a second.

The PM9E1 is available in multiple storage capacities including 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB, the largest in the industry. The 4TB model is particularly ideal for users who work with large files, such as AI-generated material, high-definition films, games, and other resource-intensive workloads.

Samsung’s new SSD also delivers over 50% more power, resulting in longer battery life, which is extremely crucial for AI algorithms that run on smartphones. In terms of security, Samsung has integrated advanced options like the Security Protocol and Data Model (SPDM) v1.2, which includes secure channels and device authentication to protect against supply chain risks.

Samsung is set to broaden its PCIe 5.0 SSD lineup worldwide, reinforcing its dominance in the on-device AI sector and gearing up to introduce consumer products utilizing this cutting-edge technology soon.
