Reddit’s mobile and web applications experienced a widespread outage on Wednesday afternoon, causing frustration for over 150,000 users who reported this issue on Downdetector. The issue occurred around 1:30 PM in San Francisco.
Users encountered a particular message while attempting to access the homepage of Reddit, “Server error. Try again later.”
According to the company, Reddit.com endured a “degraded status” as of 1:16 p.m. PT on its status page.
But it is now confirmed by the company that its systems are operational and back to normal approximately an hour later.
The thorough investigation of the issue revealed that the company has determined the major cause of the issue was the software update implemented on the system.
“Earlier today we shipped an update that unintentionally impacted platform stability,” as per the email of Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt to a media outlet. “We deployed a fix and are back up and running.”
The status of the page of Reddit was amended at 2:16 PM to indicate that the issue had been remedied as a result of the implementation of a fix.
Some users may still be having difficulty accessing the platform, but services should trickle back online shortly, according to the company.
According to its status page, Reddit has experienced only a handful of significant disruptions in the past 90 days, as per its status page. Even though some users are still experiencing difficulty accessing the platform, the company anticipates that services will be restored shortly.
