ISLAMABAD: Islamic Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has successfully set up more than 200,000 advanced Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters in different areas of Rawalpindi City and Cantonment Circles.
The AMI has been running smoothly in two of IESCO’s operational circles—Rawalpindi City and Rawalpindi Cantt—according to Project Director Moshin Raza Gillani, who described it as a groundbreaking government initiative in the power industry. The latest estimate indicates that more than 200,000 older meters have been upgraded to AMI ones. The goal is to replace all older meters in Rawalpindi City, Rawalpindi Cantt Circles, Taxila, and the adjacent areas with AMI meters by January 2026.
He mentioned that AMI has been set up in many locations throughout the city, including Muslim Town, Ghangal, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Road, Gulzar e Quaid, PWD, the Khana area, Korang Town, Pakistan Town, Sawan Garden, Media Town, CBR, Aghosh Town, and many more. The Chaklala and Defence regions of Rawalpindi are also undergoing the installation of AMI meters, he noted. According to him, every day, some 3,000 meters are being replaced.
Furthermore, he mentioned that AMI meters were also being installed on feeders serving companies with major losses. As a result, power outages, line losses, and theft would all be less likely to occur.

- Control and monitoring of power consumption in real-time;
- improved recovery position;
- Better customer service;
- Automated complaint registration of defective meters to the relevant field office;
- A balanced distribution system and distribution transformers led to a decrease in complaints about burned-out meters and transformers;
- And, of course, 100% accurate and timely meter readings.
IESCO is proud to be the first power distribution company in Pakistan to conduct this pilot project, according to Moshin Raza Gillani.
