Punjab To Suspend Vehicle Registrations For Unpaid Token Tax

LAHORE: The Excise and Taxation Department is taking stronger action against people who haven’t paid their token tax. The Director General, Umar Sher Chattha, has ordered that car registrations be stopped for those who do not comply.

Media reports say that Chattha told enforcement teams to seize the vehicles of major offenders and fine those who are a year or more overdue. He warned that strict action would be taken without any exceptions.

As part of his review of recent enforcement efforts, he revealed that excise teams inspected 173,411 vehicles at 1,051 checkpoints spread out over Punjab between January 1, 2025, and January 25, 2025. Out of these, 5,427 were not listed, 18,958 were recognized as tax evaders, and 9,156 were using fake license plates.

Additionally, the officials disclosed that the outstanding token tax in Lahore alone is almost PKR 2.75 billion.

Department officials have stressed the need to pay overdue accounts in order to prevent fines and car seizures.
