Punjab Government approves 7 schemes for development in education & transport sector

The Punjab Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) has approved seven development schemes worth Rs. 11.46 billion in the sectors of Health, Education, Transport and Highways. The schemes and their respective allocations were approved in the first PDWP meeting of the current fiscal year 2016 – 2017.

Planning and Development Board Chairman Muhammad Jahanzeb Khan presided over the meeting which was attended by other members of the P&D board, provincial secretaries and senior representatives of the concerned provincial departments.

According to a spokesperson of the P&D Department, the seven approved schemes comprise of land acquisition for University of Gujrat sub campus in Narowal at the cost of Rs. 253.993 million; a much-needed renovation of Multan’s Nishtar Medical College at the cost of Rs. 311.433 million; construction of a Cadet College in Khanpur, Rahim Yar Khan; establishment of Directorate General of Monitoring and Evaluation (Health) which will cost an estimated Rs. 333.586 million.

The Punjab government also seems to have a plan to attend to our much-neglected roads and highways. The three schemes in this regard include: a topographic survey and geo-technical studies for land sliding zonation of Murree Hills area; rehabilitation and widening of 10’-12’ rural roads under Khadim-e-Punjab Rural Roads Programme, Phase-II (Part-A) in Punjab Highways Department, South Zone which will cost Rs. 5875.051 million and a construction of bridge over River Indus Near Miranpur at the cost of Rs. 3951.392 million.

The Punjab government has always had big plans for restoring Punjab to its glory. And some even bigger numbers to materialize those plans. This year, too, the Punjab Assembly unveiled a hefty budget with development plans in various sectors. Time will reveal whether these plans reach fruition.
