PUBG is getting a lite version

PUBG lite is in beta now but it is only available in Thailand. Currently, in order to play the game, a VPN with Thailand IP option is required. The toned down version of the game was announced this week by PUBG Corp. saying it is for “players in areas where the core game’s required specifications are more difficult to achieve due to the hardware available.” This may be a hint that the game probably won’t be released worldwide.

The game is produced by an exclusive development team and will get special content. It features:

  • The new Erangel map
  • Facilitates Solo/Duo/Squad play options
  • Is free-to-play

The system requirements of the new version are summarised below. With only an Intel i3 processor requirement and a minimum of 4 GB RAM, it is very accessible. Moreover, the game requires only 4 GB of the hard drive. Comparing this with the original PUBG which requires an Intel i5 processor, 8 GB RAM and a high-end graphics card with 2 GB VRAM. Not only this, but the game requires a whopping 30 GB of the hard drive.

One of Fortnite’s big advantage is its low graphics requirements. Although it comes at the cost of making the game look cartoonish. PUBG, on the other hand, offers a more realistic view, however, that results in poor framerates, even on high-end machines. It is not always the case that realistic graphics will have poor framerates. But it depends on which engine is used to create the game and how optimized it is.

Additionally, Fortnite is also free to play, unlike the PC version of PUBG. Obviously, people wishing to try out the Battle Royale genre will go for Fortnite. With PUBG Lite, Tencent games is looking to do the same. It is the optional cosmetic purchases that have netted Epic up to an estimated $2.4 billion. PUBG is not far behind with $1 billion in revenues since launch. However, it must be irksome for the PUBG developers considering PUBG was released before Fortnite.
