Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in its move to eradicate stolen and smuggled phone from the country is launching a new system called Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS). This step by PTA is in the right direction as many stolen smartphones or feature phones with non-standard approvals are being used for criminal activities.
PTA announced DIRBS back in September and assured that this system will totally block the import and trade of non-compliant mobile devices. According to PTA, the newly designed system will be capable of detecting fake, stolen, snatched and outlawed import of mobile handsets working in the countries. After confirmation of the device which falls under this criteria, authorities will permanently block the device to operate on mobile networks in Pakistan.
DIRBS works with a quite simple procedure. To detect non-compliant devices IMEI number of the handset will be used, while other mobile identifying tools will also be applied. IMEI number comes with each mobile phone assigned by GSMA, all around the globe. The phone will be blocked after detection permanently.
PTA is also intending to launch a Device Verification System (DVS) before the launch of DIRBS. DVS can be easily accessible through DIRBS website, mobile app, and SMS to check the validity of the handset.
This step by PTA will be extremely helpful for the public which is facing many problems due to the unavailability of an efficient system to prevent criminal activities involving mobile phones. Major smartphones brands which are popular in Pakistan like Samsung, Huawei and QMobile have also faced huge loss, as most of the smuggled smartphones sold in markets come with very low price than the actual cost of the phone. The state as a whole is facing a crisis due to these smuggled devices, which have badly impacted the imports.
On the other hand, increased number of mobile theft and snatching in big cities like Karachi is also another fatigue, which many citizens face. Alongside, expediting the launch of this system PTA has also boosted the move to begin the process of 5G testing.
