The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) urged major social media platforms to block harmful and inappropriate content as part of an ongoing campaign to stop the dissemination of harmful and inappropriate content on the internet.
PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman highlighted that the authority receives approximately 500 complaints monthly regarding inappropriate content on social media platforms. Although PTA is successful in getting 80% of the requested content removed, the remaining 20% often goes unaddressed. He emphasized the importance of these platforms implementing stronger measures to curb the dissemination of harmful material.
Chairman Rehman responded to the recent suspension of social media and internet services in certain areas by pointing out that in addition to Ministry of Interior directions, there have been several cases of internet shutdowns carried out by Supreme Court decisions.
He also noted that, in contrast to the government’s attempts to block virtual private networks (VPNs) through a nationwide registration initiative designed to oversee online content, he has chosen not to impede VPNs.
In a related development, the Secretary of the Ministry of Information Technology has announced plans for the installation of three additional undersea cables by next year. This infrastructure enhancement is anticipated to greatly improve internet speed throughout Pakistan, tackling the persistent issues of stabilizing robust internet connectivity across the nation.
