The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has advised users to quickly update their Google Chrome browsers because two serious security issues have been found.
The advisory says that the vulnerabilities could let remote attackers run harmful code on affected systems. Chrome versions prior to the emergency update are affected by these vulnerabilities; they affect Windows, macOS, and Linux.
The first security hole, CVE-2024-4671, allows malicious actors to bypass Chrome’s sandbox and access user devices via maliciously designed websites, as reported by PTA. Another vulnerability that could cause arbitrary code execution is CVE-2024-4761, which impacts the V8 JavaScript engine. Both flaws pose a significant risk since they can be exploited through compromised websites.
Google has issued an advisory to all users to update to Chrome 124.0.6367.207 or later in order to reduce the risks. Relaunching the browser will show users whether there is an available update, or they may go to “Settings > About Chrome” to see what version they are using. To make sure you’re always protected from new threats, the advice suggests setting Chrome to update automatically.
Additionally, the PTA has stressed the importance of users keeping a close eye on their systems for any indications of suspicious behavior that may suggest an attempt at exploitation. Businesses and individuals should notify the PTA CERT Portal or send an email if they experience any security events connected to these vulnerabilities.
Cybersecurity professionals stress the need to be proactive due to the rising frequency of browser-based security risks.
