Pakistanis To Get Cheap Mobile Phones? Here’s What We Know!

ISLAMABAD: The federal government, under the leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has announced a significant initiative to make mobile phones more affordable for the public. State Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, revealed this plan while highlighting the distribution of over 1.1 million laptops under the PML-N’s tenure.

Affordable Mobile Phones and Digital Empowerment

The newly introduced scheme aims to provide affordable mobile phones to enhance digital accessibility for Pakistanis. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to bridge the digital divide and promote technological inclusion.

Addressing concerns in a recent National Assembly session, Shaza Fatima emphasized the importance of digitization despite current technological challenges. She assured that internet speeds and connectivity are improving, with a reported 28% technical increase in internet speed, as recorded by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Tackling Internet and IT Challenges

Pakistan’s internet infrastructure currently operates on a 5.5 spectrum, which has contributed to sluggish connectivity in high-demand areas. Efforts are underway to improve these issues, with the rollout of 4G and 5G networks scheduled for April. This development aims to address years of underinvestment in the IT sector.

Despite progress, Pakistan still ranks among the lowest globally in mobile and broadband speeds, as reported by Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index. Internet users continue to face slow connections, frequent outages, and restrictions on VPN usage, limiting access to various platforms.

Commitment to Cybersecurity and Education

Shaza Fatima also addressed cybersecurity concerns, highlighting over 150 recent cyberattacks targeting security services. She reiterated the government’s commitment to national security, emphasizing the importance of robust cybersecurity measures.

Additionally, Maryam Nawaz announced the second phase of the laptop program, set to commence in January. Scholarships under this program will be awarded equitably, irrespective of political affiliation, empowering underprivileged students through merit-based opportunities.
