Government of Pakistan wins “Government Leadership Award” in the category of ‘Government Excellence Awards’ at GSMA Global Mobile Awards 2017.
The Glomo (Global Mobile) Awards are a part of Mobile World Congress happening in Barcelona, Spain. The Minister of IT and Telecom, Ms. Anusha Rehman received the award on the behalf of Pakistan. She has been invited by the GSMA to participate in the Annual GSMA Ministerial Programme 2017 at Mobile World Congress 2017.
The GSMA Government Leadership Award recognizes the government that has demonstrated top-notch leadership in telecommunications regulatory policy and practice in the previous year. It recognizes the Government of Pakistan’s proactive approach in consulting with the industry as it embarks on a series of regulatory reforms, starting with the adoption of the Telecom Policy 2015.
The Government of Pakistan has also consistently shown support for mobile enabled ICT (Information and Communication Technology). This shows that mobile can be central to Pakistan’s Vision 2025 goals as well as the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Though Pakistan still faces many challenges, this award recognizes the openness to a constructive dialog with the industry to form the future policy framework of the country. Speaking at the event, the minister said,
“This award belongs to the people of the Pakistan and to the telecom sector industry which is connecting the unconnected in partnership with the government. This award recognizes the government’s proactive approach of consulting the industry as it embarks on a series of regulatory reforms, starting with the adoption of the Telecom Policy 2015 to drive further regulatory modernization in the country”.
Pakistan also won this award in 2006. The eligibility criteria for Government Leadership Award are: good practice in terms of government transparency, stable regulation that promotes innovation and long-term investment, policies that facilitate access to mobile broadband, good management of spectrum and contribution to national economic and social targets as a result of mobile sector growth.
Pakistan’s Jazzcash has won “Best Mobile Product, Application or Service for Women in Emerging Markets” award in the category of “Social & Economic Development”.
