Pakistan’s Mobile Phone Imports Drop 7.46% in H1 FY2024-25

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan mobile phone imports totaled $733.425 million in the first half (July-December) of fiscal year 2024-25, showing a 7.46% decline compared to $792.581 million in the same period of FY 2023-24, sources told TechJuice.

In rupee terms, the country imported mobile handsets worth Rs203.919 billion in the first half of the current fiscal year, reflecting a 10.24 percent decline from Rs277.189 billion during the same period last year.

Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $1.898 billion during the fiscal year 2023-24, compared to $570.071 million in fiscal year 2022-23.

On a Month-on-Month (MoM) basis, Pakistan mobile phone imports increased by 9.29 percent in December 2024, standing at $163.257 million compared to $149.375 million in November 2024. However, on a Year-on-Year (YoY) basis, imports showed a negative growth of 7.27 percent, down from $176.063 million in December 2023.

The overall telecom imports in Pakistan stood at $997.083 million during July-December 2024, reflecting a negative growth of 1.33 percent compared to $1.01 billion in the same period in 2023. Despite this, telecom imports increased by 9.63 percent on a MoM basis in December 2024, reaching $202.719 million compared to $184.907 million in November 2024. On a YoY basis, the overall telecom imports showed a negative growth of 6.21 percent, dropping from $216.133 million in December 2023.

In terms of local manufacturing, 28.43 million mobile handsets were manufactured or assembled locally during the first eleven months (January-November) of 2024, compared to just 1.49 million imported commercially. Of the locally manufactured handsets, 11.42 million were 2G and 17.01 million were smartphones.

According to data from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), 65 percent of mobile devices on the Pakistani network are smartphones, while 35 percent are 2G devices.
