Pakistan has launched its first biomass energy demonstration plant in Sajawal, Sindh, to promote cleaner energy, support rural livelihoods, and reduce pressure on forest resources.
The plant is located in Pinnah Reserved Forest and was established under the Global Environment Facility-funded Promotion and Application of Sustainable Biomass Energy Technologies in Pakistan (PASBET) project. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Sindh government jointly inaugurated the facility, which is the first of four planned demonstration sites across the country.
The five-year PASBET project, worth $3.5 million, aims to promote sustainable biomass technologies across Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It will use forest and agricultural residues to produce cleaner fuel while supporting pellet production, community nurseries, and efficient cookstoves.
