Pakistan is gearing up to accelerate its digital transformation with a 5G spectrum auction reportedly set for April 2025. Addressing a press conference, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, the state minister for IT and telecommunications, highlighted the government’s dedication to realizing comprehensive digitalization across the nation. She emphasized the vital significance of this initiative in bringing the nation in line with international benchmarks.
Khawaja recognized the obstacles and difficulties that have impeded Pakistan’s advancement in digital proficiency but affirmed that the government is committed to implementing policies designed to improve internet speeds and broadband services.
“As the economy improves, we believe that other areas essential for economic stabilization will also witness positive changes,” the minister stated.
She also revealed plans to enhance 4G and 5G spectrums to ensure faster and more reliable internet services across the country. Commenting on persistent internet disruptions that have long plagued Pakistan, Khawaja expressed concern over the adverse impact on the IT sector, freelancers, and digital businesses—key contributors to the nation’s economic growth.
Pakistan’s upcoming 5G auction is likely to face various problems as the National Economic Research Associates (NERA) has said in its report. Key issues include low utilization of existing spectrum, restrictive internet policies, and the decision to auction the 5G spectrum in foreign currency. Telecom operators have also opposed the underutilization of the 4G spectrum and limited participation due to economic uncertainty.
Despite these challenges, the government’s focus on enhancing connectivity and digital infrastructure remains unwavering. The PTA’s ability to address these issues will be pivotal in determining the success of the 5G auction and its contribution to the country’s digital future.
