OpenAI Explored Building a Humanoid Robot, Says Report

OpenAI, renowned for its advancements in artificial intelligence, has recently considered developing its own humanoid robot. The Information reported this consideration, citing two individuals with direct knowledge of the discussions.

Historically, OpenAI has been involved in the robotics sector. In 2020, the organization developed Dactyl, a system designed to train robotic hands to manipulate physical objects, including solving a Rubik’s Cube. However, in 2021, OpenAI disbanded its robotics division to focus on generative AI technologies, such as GPT-3.

In the interim, OpenAI has made strategic investments in several robotics startups, including Physical Intelligence, Figure, and 1X Technologies. These investments suggest a sustained interest in the robotics field.

The potential development of a humanoid robot by OpenAI would position the organization alongside companies like Figure and 1X Technologies, which are actively developing humanoid robots. For instance, Figure has introduced the Figure 02, a commercially viable autonomous humanoid robot designed for various applications.

While OpenAI has not publicly confirmed plans to develop a humanoid robot, the recent discussions and strategic investments indicate a renewed interest in the robotics sector. The integration of advanced AI models, such as ChatGPT, into humanoid robots could enhance human-robot interactions across various scenarios.

OpenAI’s renewed interest in humanoid robotics, coupled with its previous investments and expertise in AI, positions the organization to potentially make significant contributions to the field in the near future.
