OpenAI has introduced a groundbreaking way to interact with its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, through a combination of free phone services and global WhatsApp integration. This new feature, part of OpenAI’s “12 Days of Christmas” updates, is designed to simplify access to AI technology, offering an entry-level experience, especially for users who are less tech-savvy or unfamiliar with web-based platforms.
As part of the launch, U.S.-based users can now connect with ChatGPT by dialing 1-800-CHATGPT. The voice call service is free but Each phone number is allowed to have 15 minutes of call time per month.
This feature is intended as a user-friendly entry point for those new to AI, enabling a simplified interaction with ChatGPT without requiring complex interfaces or logins.
“This is a stepping stone for AI newcomers, designed to provide a user-friendly experience,” OpenAI’s chief product officer Kevin Weil stated.
For users outside the United States, OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s reach through WhatsApp. Users globally can now call the number 1-800-242-8478 to chat with ChatGPT. It is available in the areas where ChatGPT is active and based on it, it has a simple text and AI interface.
WhatsApp’s integration is particularly significant due to the app’s massive user base of over two billion active users worldwide. Popular adoption also means that users do not need to sign up for more apps or figure out new interfaces to use ChatGPT.
Both the phone and WhatsApp services are designed as entry-level access points and come with some limitations. The voice call feature remains an experimental feature where currently users can only have up to 15 minutes of voice call connection per month.
Additionally, WhatsApp interactions are limited to text-based chats, with advanced features such as file uploads, search capabilities, and customization options unavailable on these platforms.
Users will also be unable to add ChatGPT to group chats, as it is designed for one-on-one conversations only. For those seeking more advanced features, users are advised to create an account with ChatGPT through the official app or website.
OpenAI has addressed privacy concerns, stating that the data collected through these calls or messages will not be used to train its large language models. Some of these data may be rerouted for safety checks for abuse and violation checks, but this data will not contribute to AI model training. Users also have the option to request data deletion through OpenAI’s privacy policy.
Currently, in an experimental phase, OpenAI plans to refine the service based on user feedback. While the voice call feature is limited to U.S. users, WhatsApp access is available globally. OpenAI aims to balance AI model costs with broader accessibility.
This launch is part of OpenAI’s expansion, including tools like Sora (AI text-to-video) and a premium subscription for $200/month. Future updates will enhance accessibility and features to meet the needs of a growing global audience.
