The OnePlus Open garnered significant attention in 2023, due to its large displays, square design, and robust multitasking features integrated into OxygenOS. As we approach 2025, excitement is mounting for the imminent release of its successor, the OnePlus Open 2.
The OnePlus Open 2 is expected to closely resemble its predecessor but with a few key upgrades. New leaks provide some renders depicting it, showing a sleeker look with more rounded-off edges, a smaller camera bump, and slightly rounded edges for better ergonomics. The device will have a 6.4” external cover screen and a second internal, foldable 8” OLED screen operating at a 120Hz refresh rate. Other additions to prepare include the foldable’s IPX8 water resistance capability, which is more water resistant than the original’s IPX4 rating.
While the back of the device will likely maintain the familiar Hasselblad branded camera module and flash, while the design language will be more rounded off as seen in rivals such as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It is also thinner than the OnePlus Open 2 which is rumored to be thinner than 10mm , making it thinner than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold (10.5mm).
Under the hood, the OnePlus Open 2 will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, which will make it the first foldable in the U.S. to feature this chip. With support for as much as 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, the Open 2 will surely provide excellent performance when it comes to multitasking and utilization of heavy applications. Also, OxygenOS 15 with Android 15 OS will introduce the newest features, such as enhanced multitasking that is powered by Open Canvas.
Among the most significant improvements will be to the battery compartment. The battery capacity will be upgraded to 5,900mAh from the initial 4,800mAh to support an 80W fast wired charge and 50W fast wireless charge to maximize device usage time and charging time. Wireless charging was notably left out in the original OnePlus Open, thus bringing it in this version is a great improvement.
OnePlus Open 2 could have a triple 50 MP camera setup on the back, including enhancements by AI to enhance scene identification and image enhancement. The front selfie camera will have a resolution of 32MP and another 20MP camera will be used for video calls and selfies. Future AI enhancements should also bring the camera even higher, optimizing the picture quality for everyday and folding applications.
The OnePlus Open 2, like the original device, will include a more improved version of OxygenOS as well. The updated OxygenOS 15 features will integrate AI tools into the system to enhance multitasking, Magic Eraser operation, and other entertainment tools. The incorporation of AI into the system will be one major feature to look out for to improve how the foldable screen is deployed.
While the exact price of the OnePlus Open 2 has not been confirmed yet. However, it is expected to be priced slightly lower than its main competitors, such as the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6.
The OnePlus Open 2 is expected to launch in early 2025, with rumors suggesting a March release.
