OnePlus CEO is open to making a smaller phone, but not at the moment

OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau, in a recent interview given to PCMag, claimed that he would love to make a smaller OnePlus phone, but they won’t be able to do it right now as the battery tech is still not evolved enough.

The interview, which was mainly focused on the promotion of the new OnePlus 6T McLaren edition, contained some interesting information about sales of OnePlus in the US and the possibility of a 5G OnePlus phone in the near future

Lau claimed that OnePlus 6T is selling 249 percent more than OnePlus 6. A feat which is likely due to OnePlus officially working with T-Mobile to make the device available on the network.

Lau claimed that losing the headphone jack was a very painful decision, but one which was necessary to make room for a larger battery. A larger battery, which can make the phone run smoothly for more than a day is also the reason OnePlus is making larger phones. Lau acknowledged the requests for a smaller, more manageable OnePlus phone, but he said that unless battery technology improves and they can provide similar longevity using a smaller sized battery.

Lau said that OnePlus’s 5G phone will work on sub 6 GHz frequencies, which might mean that it probably won’t be compatible with all carriers when it is launched. The reason behind using 6 GHz frequency is that those are much easier to make.

OnePlus will also be introducing some interesting camera tech soon, one of which is replacing the background of photos on the fly to create an effect similar to using green-screens. This is dependent on increased computational power from the next Qualcomm processor

Lastly, Lau confirmed that OnePlus is getting into the smart TV game, but he declined to provide information about its launch date, repeating the mantra of OnePlus that it will be released when it’s ready.
